Causal association between Parkinson’s Disease and periodontitis

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

The P2D research group was founded to deepen the knowledge on the roles of inflammation caused by periodontitis and the periodontal pathogens’ roles in the pathophysiology of Parkinson’s Disease. This research group congregates experts in several areas of knowledge and intends to go beyond the frontier of knowledge on the ‘neuro-perio’ field of study.

P2D is a project of the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) (CiiEM). As part of the CRU, the Egas Moniz Dental Clinic (EMDC) performs over 70.000 appointments/year, with 8.000 new yearly patients. CDEM is a reference dental hospital that offers community-oriented teaching and research services.

Overall, P2D short- and long-term goals are the acquisition of new knowledge on how periodontal and neurological health connect, the promotion of active interaction between students and the disclosure of progress in this field to society. As part of this mission, we are in agreement with the strategic lines established by the Egas Moniz – Cooperativa de Ensino Superior, CRL and those of the Horizon Europe program.
