Abstract

This chapter discusses the phenomenon of domestic violence between same-sex intimate partners. First, we will review the literature on the prevalence of domestic violence, comparing rates among gay, lesbian and bisexual couples. The analyzed literature reveals that violence rates differ between various studies, mostly due to the large variety of methodologies and the absence of standardization in data collection procedures. Second, the similarities, differences and specific characteristics of gay, lesbian and bisexual couples will be discussed in comparison to heterosexual couples. Although similarities in the dynamics of homosexual and heterosexual couples have been found, the former face more obstacles regarding exposure of violence. Therefore, we will discuss the legal and nonlegal barriers faced by victims of homosexual abusive relationships. The existence of homophobic, prejudiced attitudes and social behaviors contribute to the exclusion of individuals with these sexual orientations from society and their own families, as well as their victimization. Studies reveal that this population should not be neglected in regard to research and interventions, thus reinforcing the need to create prevention policies that overcome obstacles regarding exposure to violence.
