Abstract

In order to achieve a student-centered teaching/learning and to meet continuous improvement as well as quality and relevance growth, the Quality and Evaluation Board of the Nursing School of Coimbra decided that it would be relevant to know students’ opinions on the profile of a ‘Good Teacher’. In this context, a study was developed to identify students’ assessment about the characteristics which distinguish this profile. This is a qualitative study carried out by means of a self-completed questionnaire. This questionnaire contains the open question “What makes a good teacher?” and the identification of the participant’s course. The sample consists of 174 undergraduate students and 52 post-graduate nursing specialization students. From the set of indicators of a “good teacher”, the dominant ones are: mastery of course content, and the ability to captivate and motivate, developing a good relationship with students, availability and accessibility, understanding and tolerance, to relate theory with practice, demand, attendance and punctuality.
