Resumo
The authors carried a retrospective design to study the effect of antiretroviral treatment over common hematologic parameters. They collected the results of 17 patients with antibodies anti-HIV concerning the MCV, Red Cells, Hemoglobin, Leucocyte and Platelets just before treatment and one month, 3 months and six months past. In another group of 24 patients with antibodies anti-HIV and increased VGM (> 96 fL) were prospectively determined B12 and folates serum levels and reticulocyte index. The authors compared the Confidence Intervals of Median regarding the 4 periods. ANOVA supported difference in MCV comparison but not in Red Cells or Hemoglobin. The MCV increased at 6 months but there was overlapping of Red Cell count and Hemoglobin Confidence Intervals. The distribution of Leucocytes and Platelets was not normal in one of the 4 periods and therefore not submited to statistical analysis. The B12 and folates assays did not show any low value. About reticulocyte index only 1 patient was clearly under normal. The authors consider that the progressive increasing in MCV, predominantly due to zidovudine but eventually to other mechanims, is not parallel to red cells and hemoglobin variations and found in this trial no good correlation with B12 folates ou reticulocyte elevation.
